UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 16 (Xinhuanet) -- United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan said on Thursday that the unanimous endorsement of the resolution on Iraq's future demonstrated the will of all members of the Security Council to put the interests of the Iraqi people above all other considerations.

Annan made the statement after the Security Council adopted unanimously the United States-proposed resolution on Iraq.

The UN chief commended the members of the Security Council for having reached this significant agreement on what obviously is a particularly important resolution to address the complex situationin Iraq.

"The process has been difficult. But the outcome is a clear demonstration of the will of all the members of the Security Council to place the interests of the Iraqi people above all other considerations," he said.

"Our common objective is to restore peace and stability to a sovereign, democratic and independent Iraq as quickly as possible. It is critical to the Iraqi people, the region and the entire international community that we succeed in reaching the goal of anIraq that is at peace with itself and with its neighbors, and is contributing to stability in the region," the UN chief stressed.

He said although at this moment the United Nations had only a skeleton presence on the ground, "we are determined to continue helping the Iraqi people as best as we can, from both inside and outside the country, primarily in providing humanitarian assistance."

The resolution adopted by the Security Council authorizes the transformation of the current occupying force in Iraq into a US-led multinational force. It gives the Iraqi Governing Council until Dec. 15 to provide a timetable for drafting a new constitution and holding elections.

But the measure does not contain a specific timetable for the end of the US occupation of Iraq as demanded by some key council members. Enditem
