BAGHDAD, Oct. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- Three huge explosions and ensuing firefight were heard in Baghdad at night time early on Thursday, a Xinhua correspondent reported.

The blasts were heard in the direction of the al-Yarmuk district in southwestern Baghdad around 1:00 a.m. Thursday (2200 GMT Wednesday), one hour after the curfew.

The US military couldn't be reached for confirmation.

Earlier, Charles Heatly, a spokesman for the US-led Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA), said two explosions had taken place outside the CPA compound in central Baghdad late Wednesday.

But he didn't give any further information or casualties.

The string of explosions occurred after the a new currency began to replace the notorious banknotes emblazoned with Saddam Hussein's image and circulate in the war-torn country as of Wednesday morning.

Big explosions triggered by car bombs, mines or rocket-propelled grenades have become a usual case following the downfallof Saddam's regime in April.

Guerilla-style fighters have killed over 90 US soldiers in Iraqsince US President George W. Bush declared the major combat over on May 1. Enditem
