PORTLAND, United States, Oct. 2 (Xinhuanet)-- China captain Sun Wen announced her retirement after the Steel Roses were stunned 1-0 by Canada in the quarter-finals of the fourth Women's World Cup here on Thursday.

Sun, 30, one of the finest players women's football has ever seen, said she has no regrets in her career and it's a time to call it quit.

"I have played my last game," she said. "Football is just a game, now life must move on."

Sun, one of only a few players in the world who have played all four World Cups, scored a total of 106 goals in her 152 appearances for China.

Sun, the Gold Ball and Gold Boot awards winner in the last World Cup, has experienced China's pinnacle when they won the 1996Olympic silver medals and the 1999 World Cup runners-up.

"I felt we had chance trailing 1-0 in the games," she said. "I never gave up. I fought until the last second."

"Football is a game that makes everybody happy. Keep enjoying the game. Ten or twenty years later, nobody can remember this match," she said.

Sun said she will further her study of international relations in Shanghai's prestigious Fudan University but has not decided what to do after graduation.

"Maybe I will become a coach. But so far, I have not made the decision. I have a lot of time.

"But one thing is certain. I have played my last game. I will neither play for China nor for any clubs." Enditem
