BERLIN, Sept. 25 (Xinhuanet) -- German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said
Thursday that multilateral cooperation is "necessary" in rebuilding postwar
Iraq.
Briefing the parliament on his attendance of the United Nations General
Assembly, Schroeder said Germany favors a "cooperative peace policy" for Iraq.
The chancellor said the fight against poverty in the war-torn country must
be part of a "rational security policy."
"Our concept of security isn't limited to military questions," he said.
Schroeder said earlier in New York that there were no fundamental
differences about a new Iraq resolution which would empower the United Nations
to play a more important role in the country.
At the United Nations General Assembly, Schroeder said "Only the United
Nations can guarantee the legitimacy necessary to enable the Iraqi people to
rapidly rebuild their country under an independent, representative government."
