SEOUL, Sept. 22 (Xinhuanet) -- The report about a helicopter crashing into a hill on
South Korean southern island of Jeju early Monday seemed "incorrect," local
police were quoted by Yonhap News Agency as saying.
The South Korean national news agency reported on Monday morning that a
helicopter crashed into a hill in Jeju island, but did not give any details.
The Jeju Provincial Police Agency said no aircraft took off at that time in the
province. And, after a joint search-and-rescue operation with the 911 rescue team,
it has yet to discover any wreckage of a chopper or aircraft from a hill in
the southern part of the island, the country's most famous resort area.
"We believe a report by a citizen was an incorrect information based on
misidentification (of a flying object)," Kim Hee-jung, a corporal at the police,
was quoted by Yonhap as saying.
The police have stopped their search operation, Yonhap added.
Earlier in the day, the police said they received a
telephone call from a local resident, identified only as a 53-year-old woman,
who reported witnessing an object believed to a helicopter crashing into the
hill, resulting in smoke and flames. Enditem |
