COLOMBO, Sept. 17 (Xinhuanet) -- The United States has urged Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels to abandon terrorism and make realistic proposals to allow the peace negotiations with the government to resume at an early date, the US embassy here said on Wednesday.

"We call on the Tigers to abandon terrorism, including political assassination, and to comply with the terms of the ceasefire agreement they signed." the US embassy said in a statement.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels have been accused of killing more than 40 government intelligence personnel following the signing of a ceasefire agreement with the governmentin February last year.

"We hope that the Tamil Tigers' response to the July 17 government proposal for an interim administration will be realistic and will allow the two sides to return to the table at an early date," the statement said.

The statement said that the US strongly supported the ongoing Norwegian-brokered peace process aimed at ending two decades of ethnic war that has claimed over 64,000 lives since 1983.

The LTTE rebels in April pulled out of the peace process charging the government of doing little to implement decisions reached at previous six rounds of talks held since September last year.

In July the government handed over its proposals on the settingup of an interim administration in the war-battered north and eastto the rebels which they demand as a precondition for their returning to the negotiating table.

The government has said that the peace talks could resume when the rebels submit their counter proposals on the interim administration to the government by the end of this month. Enditem
