BAGHDAD, Sept. 17 (Xinhuanet) -- The Iraqi Governing Council (IGC) has adopted
a new set of laws, including one concerning nationality, IGC President Ahamd
Chalabi announced Wednesday.
The new nationality law, approved by the IGC members on Tuesday, "abolishes
discrimination and equals between men and women," Chalabi told a press
conference.
"It also restores the Iraqi nationality that were denied by former Iraqi
regime and permits double nationality for Iraqi citizens," he added.
Iraqis with dual nationality could not return to Iraq under the former
regime for fearing that they might be stripped of the Iraqi nationality.
Chalabi, the current IGC rotating president, said the council also approved
a number of economic laws this week to improve the economy in the war-ravaged
country.
The new bills include income tax law, customs law, foreign investment law
and bank law, he specified, adding that they will allow Iraq to be among those
which welcome foreign investments and encourage private sector to play its role
in the reconstruction of Iraq. Enditem
