Death toll in floods rises up to 164 in India's Bihar state

  NEW DELHI, Sept. 17 (Xinhuanet) -- The death toll killed by floods in Bihar state, northeast India, shot up to 164 on Wednesday with five more death reported from flood-hit Vaishali and Purnia districts during the past 24 hours, the Press Trust of India (PTI)quoted official sources as saying.

  There was no let up in flood situation in Bihar Wednesday with the Ganga flowing above its all time high level at Kahalgaon and Bhagalpur and other major rivers.

  A population of over 5.4 million spread over 3,977 villages in 23 districts has been hit by floods, a relief and rehabilitation department press release said.

  It said standing crops in an area of 375,000 hectares and 18,000 houses had been damaged due to floods.

  Over 3,800 boats had been engaged for carrying out relief and rescue operation and 287 relief centers and 401 health centers arefunctional in flood-hit districts.

  Meanwhile, army helicopters continued to airdrop food packets and its personnel with mechanized boats were engaged in rescue andrelief operations in Patna, Munger and Saran districts. Enditem
