AU chairman assures priority for peace in Africa

   ADDIS ABABA, Sept. 16 (Xinhuanet) -- Alpha Oumar Konare, chairman of the African Union (AU) Commission, Tuesday assured that AU would determinedly work toward securing peace and security in Africa, which was vital to ensure political stability and economic development of the continent.

  Konare made the remark to the journalists after taking over thepost of AU chairmanship seat at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa,capital of Ethiopia.

  He said peace and security issues will be a major concern of all the member states in the coming years.

  "We need to give it an appropriate treatment", he said, adding,"peace and security are the basis for development. If we finance peace and security we finance development activities."

  Once the Commission is consolidated, he highlighted, there wereissues of peace and security that the AU have to deal with.

  "The issue of Burundi is one and it proofs that there was nothing complete," he said.

  Talking about mobilizing financial resources to support the peace and security movement in Africa, he said it was one of the primary activities of the Commission.

  "Financial resources are important and we need financial and material resources. Quickly we are going to take stock of the financial situation and see how we can insure that all contributions are paid," said Konare.

  Konare was elected chairman in the AU summit that took place this July in Maputo, Mozambique.

  He was elected to chair for the coming four years when Cote'd Voire withdrew its support for the AU Interim Chairperson Amara Essy.

  Konare was elected Mali's president in the year of 1992 and wasreelected in 1997 until the year of 2000. Enditem
