TEHRAN, Sept. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- Iranian President Mohammad Khatamion Monday said access to sciences and technologies, including nuclear technology, is the nation's basic requirement, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Speaking to high-ranking officers of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, Khatami said Iran's nuclear program is not aimed at destructive purposes.

He underlined Iran's policy of access to nuclear technology, adding that "we are determined to be powerful, no one can ever dissuade us from materializing such a goal."

Referring to international concern over Iran's nuclear program, Khatami said "Iran doesn't intend to produce weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and atomic bombs."

However, "Iran has access to advanced technology, including the one that is aimed at peaceful nuclear program," he stressed. He said Iran favors a region and a world free from such destructive weapons.

"Given that we have fallen victim to WMD, we don't require to have access to atomic bombs. We have no intention to produce them, since it is against our principles," the president noted. He also slammed "the US extremism and expansionism," saying "the Americans make hue and cry without any reasonable ground, suppress others in the name of campaign against violence, take terrorist measures and occupy lands as anti-terror campaign."
