SEOUL, Sept. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Typhoon Maemi claimed 85 people's lives in
South Korea and caused 450 billion won (384.3 million US dollars) in property
damage as of 6 p.m. (0900 GMT) Sunday, according to the Central Anti-Disaster
Headquarters (CADH).
Figures from the CADH showed 85 people have been confirmed deadand 30
others listed as missing as of Sunday evening.
The yearly 14th typhoon forced local nuclear power plants and other major
industrial facilities to temporarily halt operations as well as caused serious
disruptions in land, rail and air traffic and left 1.47 million homes without
power for a time.
The property damage was estimated at 450.2 billion won (384.7 million US
dollars) with 1,731 houses, buildings and other structures were destroyed or
swept away, and additional 3,237 structures submerged by strong winds and heavy
downpours, according to the CADH.
As many as 8,938 people were evacuated and took shelters at schools or
other public places.
Typhoon Maemi landed the country's southern part Friday night and swept the
southeast part of South Korea before it weakened to storm into the Sea of Japan
early Saturday.
The South Korean government began a survey of the damage by Typhoon Maemi in a
prelude to designating the southeastern regions as the special disaster area eligible
for government subsidies and tax benefits. Enditem
