KUALA LUMPUR, Sept. 9 (Xinhuanet) -- The ASEAN Chiefs of Army Multilateral Meeting
(ACAMM) would focus on enhancing the regional network in combating
terrorism, Malaysia's Chief of Army General Mohd Sharom Nordin said on Tuesday.
Opening the two-day meeting here, Mohd Sharom said the military officials
would explore ways on how armies of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations
(ASEAN) could complement each other in dealing with terrorist threats.
Besides terrorism, the meeting will also discuss action to cement ties
among the army chiefs of the member countries.
"The meeting will exchange views and explore further how membercountries
can collaborate in the area of disaster relief and trans-border crime
prevention," he said.
Mohd Sharom said the army chiefs would also explore the possibility of
establishing a hotline or keypoints of contact for exchange of information and
database.
He said ASEAN army chiefs should play their part wisely in maintaining
regional security and stability though there were differences in policies and
opinions among member countries.
"This can be achieved in many ways such as through the spirit of
brotherhood, we should communicate directly and open-mindedly to draw a
constructive, agreeable solution to a common issue," theMalaysian military chief
said.
At a press conference later, Mohd Sharom suggested other meetings be held
involving military officers from the ASEAN regionto further strengthen
multilateral cooperation.
