ASEAN army chiefs to step up efforts in tackling terrorism

  KUALA LUMPUR, Sept. 9 (Xinhuanet) -- The ASEAN Chiefs of Army Multilateral Meeting (ACAMM) would focus on enhancing the regional network in combating terrorism, Malaysia's Chief of Army General Mohd Sharom Nordin said on Tuesday.

  Opening the two-day meeting here, Mohd Sharom said the military officials would explore ways on how armies of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) could complement each other in dealing with terrorist threats.

  Besides terrorism, the meeting will also discuss action to cement ties among the army chiefs of the member countries.

  "The meeting will exchange views and explore further how membercountries can collaborate in the area of disaster relief and trans-border crime prevention," he said.

  Mohd Sharom said the army chiefs would also explore the possibility of establishing a hotline or keypoints of contact for exchange of information and database.

  He said ASEAN army chiefs should play their part wisely in maintaining regional security and stability though there were differences in policies and opinions among member countries.

  "This can be achieved in many ways such as through the spirit of brotherhood, we should communicate directly and open-mindedly to draw a constructive, agreeable solution to a common issue," theMalaysian military chief said.

  At a press conference later, Mohd Sharom suggested other meetings be held involving military officers from the ASEAN regionto further strengthen multilateral cooperation.

  ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Enditem
