TOKYO, Sept. 9 (Xinhuanet) -- Japanese Prime Minister has won support of the majority
of party members in the race for president of the Liberal Democratic
Party (LDP), a major Japanese newspaper said Tuesday.
As of Monday, Koizumi was supported by 182 LDP lawmakers, three more than
the majority of 357 party members in the parliament, said the Yomiuri Shimbun
based on a survey.
The ruling party unveiled campaign for new president, with three contenders
challenging incumbent president Koizumi.
Besides votes from party lawmaker electorate, rank-and-file party members
in the 47 prefectures will also cast vote.
The prime minister is expected to prevail in 38 prefectures, said the
daily.
Japan's economy is on the focus of their struggle. Opponents demand
governmental financial aid to revive the sluggish economy, while Koizumi is
determined to go on with his structural reforms.
The final result will emerge on Sept. 20. And if none
