UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan will
meet with ambassadors of the 15 Security Council members Monday on the US-drafted
resolution on Iraq, which seeks more international help to secure and
rebuild Iraq, informed diplomatic sources said Sunday.
Security Council members were keen to hear Annan's opinion on expanding the UN
role in Iraq, an issue which again caused heated debate after Washington circulated
the draft resolution last week, they said.
The council held its first informal consultations Friday on the US draft,
which asks for a multinational force led by the United States and greater
financial assistance for Iraq.
The draft resolution also wants the council to recognize the US-installed
governing council as Iraq's interim administration.
Apart from the UN role, the council is also divided over a timetable for
the restoration of full Iraqi sovereignty, or the end of the US-British
occupation.
In an interview with CNN Saturday, Annan said he wants to see "a very clear
definition for the role of the UN. That the mandate must be precise and
achievable."
He called on council members to make compromise in order to geta new
resolution on Iraq.
"We should leave the divisions and the reasons for war for historians and
political scientists to debate, and to focus on what we can do for the Iraqi
people and to help stabilize Iraq," he said. Enditem
