JAKARTA, Sept. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale rocked Indonesia's Banda Aceh, the capital of the war-torn Aceh province on Friday.

The head of the meteorology and geophysics office in Banda Aceh,Syahnan, said the epicenter of the quake, which struck at 08:24 amlocal time (01:24 GMT), was located in South Aceh regency, some 455 km from Banda Aceh city.

"The tremor lasted for 60 seconds," Syahnan was quoted by statenews agency Antara.

He said the quake was also felt by people in the western and southern parts of the province.

"I keep contacting state officials in the regencies near the quake center to learn any possible damages of the buildings and the houses," he said.

Since the epicenter of the quake was beneath the sea, he said, a 5.8 magnitude quake usually does not cause serious damages.

"But, we have the responsibility to coordinate with officials in the regencies near to the center of the quake," he said. Enditem
