BRUSSELS, Sept. 4, (Xinhuanet) -- President of the European Commission (EC) Romano Prodi said Wednesday that there is a great potential for cooperation between the European Union (EU) and China.

Cooperation between the two big trading partners can be in the fields of energy, science and technology, justice and home affairs, institutional reforms, environment, tourism and education, said Prodi at a meeting with Tian Congming, president of Xinhua News Agency.

Being the most populous country and the fastest growing economy in the world, China is the country with which the EU should form along-term cooperation strategy, he said.

Prodi stressed that apart from trade and investment, the EU and China should, in particular, broaden and deepen cooperation in science and technology as well as education by enhancing academic exchanges.

Tian said as a state news agency, Xinhua would play an important role in facilitating cooperation. Enditem
