LOS ANGELES, Sept. 1 (Xinhuanet) -- Horror sequel "Jeepers Creepers 2" topped
the Labor Day long weekend North American box office, collecting 18.5 million US
dollars in four days and knocking another horror flick off the number one spot.
"Jeepers Creepers 2," a low-budget sequel revolving around a group of high
school students terrorized by a winged monster, features the return of the
bestial, bat-like Creeper, this time butchering and munching on a bus full of
high school athletes and cheerleaders.
"Freddy vs. Jason," which ruled the box office for two consecutive weeks,
fell to the 6th place over the weekend with 8.1million dollars, bringing its
17-day total to 73.4 million dollars.
Disney's "Freaky Friday," a remake of the mother-daughter comedy, moved up
two spots to the second place of the box office, adding another 11.7 million
dollars for a four-week total of 89.9 million dollars.
Sony's "S.W.A.T," a cop thriller, dropped one place to third with 10.5
million dollars and crossed the 100 million dollars blockbuster mark, taking in
102.4 million dollars in four weeks.
Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean" were still at large in the weekend,
robbing movie goers off another 10.2 million, bringing its eighth week total to
274.4 million dollars.
"Open Range," an old-fashioned western, featuring Kevin Costnerand Robert
Duvall as two road-weary free-rangers bent on revenge, rounded out the top five
with 10.2 million dollars. The movie, regarded as a signal of the comeback of
Costner, whose successful movies included "Dances with Wolves," "The
Untouchables" and "JFK," took in 42.9 million dollars in three weeks. Enditem
