SEOUL, Aug. 21 (Xinhuanet) -- An independent public opinion survey
showed most of the South Korean people support President Roh Moo-hyun's
expression of "regret" over anti-Pyongyang protests last week, according to a
news release of Korean Overseas Information Service on Thursday.
In a poll conducted by South Korean major newspaper JoongAng Ilbo and
the East Asia Institute on Tuesday, when Roh Moo-hyun expressed regret over the
anti-Pyongyang demonstration, 61.8 percent of the 834 South Korean adults polled
approved Roh's expression.
While 36.1 percent of the polled people disagreed with Roh.
Moreover, according to an Internet survey of 1,619 netizens by the
Yonhap News Agency on Aug. 20-21, 68.4 percent of respondents said Roh's action
was "good," while 31.3 percent felt it was "not good" and 0.3 percent did not
give their opinions.
During anti-Pyongyang street rallies last Friday, thousands of
conservatives burned a huge flag of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea
(DPRK) and an image of the DPRK top leader Kim Jong Il.
In an angry response, Pyongyang said it would not take part in the
world university games, which will be opened Thursday in the South Korean city
of Daegu, but withdrew its boycott shortly after Roh's comments on Tuesday.
