PYONGYANG, Aug. 1 (Xinhuanet) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea
(DPRK) agreed on Friday to hold six-party talks on solution to the nuclear issue
on the Korean Peninsula.
"At the recent DPRK-US talks, the DPRK put forward a new proposal to have
six-party talks... and to have the DPRK-US bilateral talks there," said a DPRK
Foreign Ministry spokesman in an interview with the Korean Central News Agency
(KCNA), referring to the meeting between the DPRK and the US officials in New
York on Thursday.
Recently, parties concerned put forward proposals for holding multilateral
talks and the United States informed the DPRK that the DPRK-US bilateral talks
might be held within the framework of multilateral talks, the spokesman said.
Since the nuclear issue erupted last October, the DPRK has been insisting
on bilateral talks with the United States to end the standoff, while the United
States has been sticking to a multilateral framework.
The DPRK, the United States and China held three-party talks in Beijing in
April this year.
The six parties include the United States, the DPRK, China, South Korea,
Japan and Russia, but the time and place for the talks have not been finalized
yet. Enditem
