Philippine senior official says mutiny may set back economy

MANILA, July 30 (Xinhuanet) -- Philippine Finance Secretary Jose Isidro Camacho Wednesday said the weekend mutiny by junior army officers could have long-term effects to set back the government's efforts to ensure steady investments and economic growth.

"What's more worrisome is the longer term effect of the mutiny," the ABS-CBN on-line news quoted Camacho as saying.

"There can be no denying that the mutiny was a setback," he said.

Camacho is one of the first government officials to voice concern about the long-term economic and political implications of the mutiny, adding that foreign and local investors are likely to delay their investment plans for now.

Some business officials also consider the situation in the country still jittery.

Analysts have said that Sunday's siege, staged by nearly 300 disgruntled military officers at Makati business district in Manila, is expected to weaken confidence in the Philippines and bring down the amount of foreign investments in the country. Enditem
