LOS ANGELES, July 10 (Xinhuanet) - Lindows.com, a major Linux operating system
software developer based in San Diego, introducedThursday a new Linux OS product
that can be run directly from a CD-ROM, without altering or removing other
operating systems from thecomputer.
Lindows.com said its new product, LindowsCD, is a specialized version of
LindowsOS 4.0 designed to run directly from a CD-ROM bysimply inserting the CD
and restarting the computer. It offers theeasiest way to experience Linux OS on
practically any computer with no installation or set-up required.
LindowsCD includes many of the features found in LindowsOS 4.0,a Linux OS
developed by Lindows.com, including complete hardware detection, comprehensive
Plug and Play support, and multimedia support for MP3, Real Audio, Real Video
and Flash.
Due to built-in file compression, a single CD is able to contain the
LindowsOS operating system as well as a line of software, including a complete
Microsoft-compatible office suite, making it possible to open Microsoft Word,
Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Excel files without additional software,
according to Lindows.com.
"Computer users don't always have a spare computer to try (Linux) out,"
said Michael Robertson, chief executive of Lindows.com, in a statement. "When
(LindowsCD users) are done, they simplyremove the CD, restart their computer and
will find it in its original state."
Lindows.com priced its LindowsCD at 29.95 US dollars each. The company said
it is also aiming LindowsCD at training laboratories where Linux is needed only
part of the time. Enditem
