MACAO, July 7 (Xinhuanet) -- Macao's head of police on Monday called for a
closer coordination with the police departments in the Mainland, Hong Kong and
Taiwan to fight against cross-border crimes.
Wong Sio Chak, director of the Bureau of Judiciary Police, said that the
bureau has observed an upward trend of cross-border economic crimes and
drug-smuggling crimes.
"The cross-border crime rate has shot up as Macao's economy is more closely
integrated with that of the Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan," Wong said.
He said that although different legal systems are applied in the four areas,
the frequent personnel flow has pushed forward the police cooperation on
intelligence exchanges, personnel training, administration of entries and exits
at the border area and patrol at the border.
He disclosed that a symposium on counter measures
against cross-border crimes will be held in October, which will draw police
officers from Beijing, Shanghai, Yunnan Province and Hong Kong. The meeting
formerly set for this month was delayed because of the priority given to the
control of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) during the past few months.
