MACAO, July 6 (Xinhuanet) -- Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) is doing
preparations to run for the United Nations' award of the Global 500 Roll of
Honor for Environmental Achievement next year, said Vong Man Hung, president of
the executive committee of the Environment Council here Sunday.
If Macao would win the award, the result of which comes out on the World
Environment Day on June 5 every year, the tourist city could achieve a higher
international reputation and create a better living condition for its people,
she said.
Vong said the council proposed ten articles of suggestions to the
government on the building of "Green Community" in Macao in aneffort to run for
the award.
In the suggestions, the council advised the government to provide funding
support to expand urban greenery coverage, disposeof buildings that are left
half-built for years, increase public exercise facilities and enforce penalties
against misconduct that are harmful to urban hygiene.
Vong said that besides the necessity of domestic improvement, it is also
important for Macao to wage up promotions of its environmental image to win
wider acknowledgment of its achievement.
The seaside city with roughly 450 years of history
boasts a blend of the cultures of East and West that is exposed in local
architecture, living style, traditions and food. Macao host over 10 million
