””””NAIROBI, June 27 (Xinhuanet) -- The international medical humanitarian organization
Medicins Sans Frontiers (MSF or doctors without borders) on Friday called
on the Kenyan government to issue an exemption of the flight ban to Somalia
in order to resume all humanitarian flights.
””””The flight ban introduced recently by the Kenyan government forall flights
to Somalia from Kenya is severely hampering humanitarian assistance, the MSF
said in a statement issued here Friday.
””””"Assistance for health, nutrition, water and other basic services for the
most vulnerable people in Somalia is almost completely dependent on transports
from Nairobi," the MSF said.
””””"Even more critical is the effect the flight ban will have on MSF's ability
to respond to medical emergencies in the country," it said.
””””Kenya has taken a series of security measures since the weekendin response
to the continuing terrorist threat in the country.
””””One of the measures is that the government has banned all flights to
Somalia and closed Kenyan airspace to planes from the neighboring country since
June 21.
””””"Unless flights resume quickly, ongoing MSF humanitarian assistance
programs in Somalia, including services in three hospitals and 14 health
centers, will be disrupted," the MSF said.
””””However, the MSF disclosed that "so far, requests by MSF for such an
exemption have not been granted (by the Kenyan government)."
””””The MSF, founded in 1971 and based in Brussels,
Belgium, composed of physicians and other members of the medical profession, aims
to provide medical assistance to victims of war and natural disasters in the
world. Enditem ””
