US military bases in Qatar

Xinhuanet 2003-03-20 13:39:13

””””BEIJING, March 20 (Xinhuanet) -- The United States armed forces have access to Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, 45 km west of the capital, Doha.

””””With a 4,500-meter runway, long enough for fully loaded heavy bombers and transport aircraft to take off and land, Al Udeid is an ideal launch pad for US air strikes against Iraq. The facility's shelters can accommodate nearly 100 aircraft and are fortified against air strikes. Its commend and control center houses highly sophisticated equipment.

””””Stationed at Al Udeid are an F-16 fighter jets squadron, an airrefueling squadron, a reconnaissance aircraft squadron and an engineering maintenance squadron.

””””Al Udeid, the earliest US air base in the Gulf, lies 645 km away from Iraq's southern border and 1,140 km away from Baghdad, Iraq's capital.

””””Under a mutual defense pact signed by the US and Qatar on Dec. 11, 2002, the US forces are entitled to use Al Udeid, which will replace the Prince Sultan US Air Base in Saudi Arabia to be the USair commend center in the Gulf.

””””The US Army built a base for pre-positioned equipment, As Sayliyah army base, 30 km outside Doha, at a cost of 110 million US dollars in 2000. Being the world's largest pre-positioned army equipment base, As Sayliyah can supply two brigades with the tankers and other military vehicles stored there.

””””The US Central Command, which has a mobile command center at AsSayliyah Base, conducted a computer-simulation war game exercise in Dec. 2002. Enditem
