BEIJING, March
1 (Xinhuanet) ¨C The existence of illiterates in rural areas in the
21st century means shame to local government officials, according to
Wang Xiang, an entrepreneur from east China¡¯s Jiangxi Province.
Wang, a member
of the National Committee of the Chinese People¡¯s Political Consultative
Conference CPPCC), is the chief executive officer of a private enterprise in
Jiangxi. He said that born into a farmer¡¯s family, he naturally gives more
attention to the countryside.
He said that he has brought 15
proposals with him to Beijing, where he will submit his proposals to the
upcoming session of the CPPCC National Committee. One of his proposals will
state that ¡°compulsory education in the countryside should be
free.¡±
He said that great difficulty
has cropped up in compulsory education in rural areas. This is a specific
indication of the fact that economic growth has not benefited farmers
yet.
He said, ¡°If the overall
educational standards in the countryside are low and if there are still
illiterates there, there will be no overall well-off society to speak of.¡± Enditem
