Beijing: As the capital of China, Beijing
is one of the world's truly imposing cities, with a 3,000-year history and 11
million people. Covering 16,808 square kilometers in area, it is the political
and cultural center of the People's Republic.
Chengde: Chengde is an 18th-century
imperial resort, about 250 km northeast of Beijing, that is also known as Jehol
or ¡°Rehe.¡± It was discovered by the early Qing emperor Kangxi in the late 17th
century, who found the cool summer climate and natural scenery appealing as a
summer retreat. Today Chengde is a popular tourist center and now a summer
retreat for Beijing urbanites.
Guangzhou: Guangzhou,
nicknamed¡°City of Five Rams,¡± is the capital of southern China¡¯s Guangdong
Province.Long been a major port city and commercial gateway to southern
China, Guangzhou has an extensive history of foreign contact.Its culture
has maintained strong distinctions from the rest of China not only in its
cosmopolitanism and entrepreneurial spirit, but in its formidably complex
dialect and world-famous cuisine.
Shanghai: The largest city in China,
Shanghai contains the most striking blend of oriental and western cultures and
of the past and present. In this city, European-style buildings can be seen
standing alongside typical Chinese structures and ancient temples. Modern
ocean-going vessels sail past junks. A flourishing commercial and industrial
center, Shanghai has a population of over 12 million and a land area of 3,355
square miles.
Suzhou: Suzhou is located in the south of
Jiangsu province, some 50 miles west of Shanghai, along the old Grand Canal. The
city has been famous for its gardens for many centuries. According to a Chinese
proverb says: ¡°In heaven there is paradise. On earth there are Suzhou and
Hangzhou.¡± Suzhou has also long been noted for its beautiful women.
Zhuhai: Zhuhai SEZ(Special Economic Zone), standing
up in the trend of China's reform and opening-up, is a new garden seaside city
in South China, and also one of the earliest special economic zones established
in China. She locates in South Guangdong province, covers a land area of 1514
sq.m, a sea area 6135 sq.m, with 690 km coastline, 146 islands large and small,
bestowed the title "City of 100 Islands".
