10,000 people in Bangkok protest war on Iraq

””””BANGKOK, Feb. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- About 10,000 people demonstrated before the US embassy in Bangkok on Saturday morning and handed intheir protest letter against the war on Iraq to the US ambassador.

””””"We stand together...to join a worldwide call for peace," read the protest letter, which was written to the US president George W.Bush and the British prime minister Tony Blair.

””””"We say a clear and powerful NO to your plan to launch militaryactions against Iraq," went on the letter, which was read aloud inThai and English by organizers on the rally.

””””Prestigious monks, priests and Muslim clergies handed in the letter and a banner with protesters' signatures to the US ambassador at the gate of the embassy compound.

””””"We come here to express our call for peace," an old man named Anan told reporters. Eighty-seven-year-old Anan is teaching at a Muslim school in Bangkok. He came to the demonstration in wheelchair, and was wheeled at the head of the procession.

””””The demonstration can't stop the war, a man named Pakorn Priya told reporter, they came here to express their wish for peace and hoped the Security Council of the United Nations would play its role.

””””Posters and banners saying "Stop the war", "No war to Iraq" , "Nothing justifies the war" etc. were carried throughout the demonstration, which started from a park in downtown Bangkok, which is 10 minutes walk to the US Embassy.
