Chinese, French presidents discuss Iraq on phone

Xinhuanet 2003-02-07 20:24:04

””””BEIJING, Feb. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- Calls for a political resolution of the Iraq issue among the international community are increasing, and the United Nations Security Council should try all means to avoid war, Chinese President Jiang Zemin said Friday in a phone conversation with French President Jacques Chirac.

””””Jiang and Chirac exchanged views on the Iraq issue during their phone talks.

””””Chirac informed Jiang of France's views about the UN Security Council's meeting on Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction, maintaining that, with all perspectives considered, Resolution 1441 should be adhered to and the weapons inspections strengthened instead of taking actions leading to a war.

””””Jiang said the Security Council's meeting on Wednesday discussed relevant issues about Iraq, which had an obligation to make further explanations and clarifications. He said the two UN weapon inspection organizations were working under clear authorization of the Security Council, and "we should support themin the continuation of their job."

””””Jiang stressed that it was the common aspiration of the international community to resolve the problem politically within the framework of the United Nations.

””””"We should propel all sides to continue working towards that direction," Jiang said. Enditem
