Sri Lankan govt gains victories through peace process: PM

Xinhuanet 2003-01-03 12:52:14

”””” COLOMBO, Jan. 3 (Xinhuanet) -- Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has said the government has been able to achieve a number of victories through the Norwegian-brokered peace process, which could not have been possible through war.

””””According to the official Daily News reports Friday, Wickremesinghe told members of the sub-committee on conflict resolution Thursday that the war effort failed because it was mainly conducted through propaganda and media.

””””He warned that if the same methods were used in the peace process the expected results would not be gained.

””””He pointed out that advance publicity given to some reports of the sub-committee members could have a negative impact on the peace talks between the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels. The premature publication of such material could put government negotiators in a difficult position,he said.

””””He stressed that confidentiality should be maintained on such critical issues.

””””The government and the LTTE rebels have held three rounds of peace talks since mid September last year and a fourth round is totake place in Thailand next week.

””””The LTTE rebels have dropped their demand for a separate Tamil homeland and agreed to share power with the government under a federal structure within one united state. Enditem
