Three Gorges damming on Yangtze successful

Xinhuanet 2002-11-06 09:56:56

With the closure of the man-made diversion canal completed at the Three Gorges Project Wednesday morning, the Yangtze, China's longest river, is fully stopped from natural flow at the famed Three Gorges.

The diversion canal built during the construction of the Three Gorges Project, a huge hydropower project on China's Yangtze River, was closed at 9:48 am Wednesday, signifying the 6,300-km-long Yangtze River has been completely dammed.

The damming of the Three Gorges Project's diversion canal on the Yangtze River was successfully completed at 9:48 a.m. Wednesday.

The giant Three Gorges Project has succeeded in staying within budget and time limit, said a senior manager with the China Yangtze River Three Gorges Project Development Corporation on Tuesday.

Special anti-corruption measures have ensured the massive Three Gorges dam project has been free of graft and embezzlement since its launch in 1993, according to a senior project manager.

Hundreds of archeologists from around China, devoted to the protection of cultural relics in the dam area of the Three Gorges, can feel the clock ticking as the water of the Yangtze River, China's longest, is ready to fill the partially-built reservoir.

Fengjie, a historic town in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, came to an end after more than 2,300 years.

A second damming of the Three Gorges on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River in November willnot negatively affect nearby scenic sites, said a local municipal official Tuesday.

The chief engineer of the massive Three Gorges dam project said Tuesday that the dam will have a long life with a high standard of safety.

Experts urge thorough understanding of silting in Three Gorges Reservoir
Although the project developers are now technically well prepared for the silting problem, said Ji Xuewu, a well-known Chinese hydrologist, a thorough understanding of the problem is necessary because it affects the Three Gorges Reservoir and the lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

China has begun taking measures to prevent landslides and other potential geological hazards at the site of the Three Gorges Reservoir on China's Yangtze River.

A total of 130,000 single projects completed thus far for the Three Gorges Project have all met quality requirements, a engineer said Friday.
