Cooperation with UN -- cornerstone of Myanmar's foreign policy: minister

  ””YANGON, Sept. 20 (Xinhuanet) -- Myanmar Foreign Minister U Win Aung has stressed that cooperation with the United Nations stands as the cornerstone of Myanmar's foreign policy.

””””He made the remarks in a statement at the 57th Session of the UN General Assembly Thursday.

””””The United Nations plays an indispensable role in collective endeavor to overcome daunting challenges while conflicts in various regions threaten global peace and security and millions ofpeople the world over remain mired in the vicious circle of ignorance, poverty and disease, he said.

””””He maintained that the UN Charter provides the bedrock principles for maintaining peace and security, stressing that "these principles must remain inviolate, if we are to meet the daunting challenges that confront us. It is only through multilateral action that we can hope to overcome these challenges."

””””Commenting on terrorism, he warned that the danger and threat, posed by terrorism to mankind, has become a global phenomenon, saying that only through collective endeavor then it can be hoped to overcome this menace.

””””He stressed that Myanmar is against terrorism in all forms and manifestations, pledging that it will extend full cooperation withthe international community to fight the menace.

””””The Myanmar minister complained that although people live in anage of unprecedented prosperity, it is not shared by all. "While some nations enjoy highest standard of living, the majority remains in poverty," he said.

””””These countries, either because of the resource constrains, lack of capital and technology or because of conflicts, cannot hope to attain development without international cooperation, he said.

””””With regard to Myanmar's domestic affairs, U Win Aung said his government's goal is to bring to reality the people's aspiration for a multi-party democratic political system, adding that Myanmaris laying firm foundation to this end to enable the system to havestrength to withstand any challenges that emerge.

””””"Understanding, cooperation and encouragement by the international community will hasten in this process towards achieving our cherished goal. Ostracizing and exerting political pressures will surely not help but rather hinder the path to our cherished goal of democracy," he said. Enditem
