Namibian president calls for implementation of Agenda 21

Xinhuanet 2002-09-02 23:21:04

””JOHANNESBURG, Sept. 2 (Xinhuanet) -- Namibian President Sam Nujoma Monday called on world leaders to implement Agenda 21 to effectively arrest environmental degradation and enhance social and economic development.

””””Speaking at the opening ceremony of the high level segment of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg,Nujoma said the people of the world are looking at the summit and are assessing the world leaders' achievements on the implementation of Agenda 21.

””””Agenda 21, the blueprint for sustainable development adopted atthe Earth Summit in Rio in 1992, has set the targets of implementation plan to check poverty, air and water pollution, deforestation, over-fishing, and climate change, among others.

””””"Agenda 21 is a vision for a world where human beings are at the center of development activities where they direct these progress in a responsible manner," the president said.

””””"It reaffirms the link between environment and development and includes everybody and all countries in efforts to ensure and promote sustainable development."

””””As a semi-arid country, Namibia attaches importance to the United Nations Convention to Combat Deserfication, he said, addingthat the government has also paid special attention to the eradication of poverty and inequality in the country.

””””"A serious concern to my country and indeed to the developing world as a whole, pertains to costs and constrains on the developing countries with respect to the implementation of Agenda 21," Nujoma said.

””””It is important to note that the capacities of developing countries, especially African countries to effectively implement Agenda 21 are being hampered by the burden of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, poverty and civil strife, he said.

””””Therefore, the implementation of Agenda 21 should be enhanced through financial and technical assistance from the developed countries, he added.

””””The WSSD, as the follow-up of the Rio Earth Summit, has been set focus on the issues related to water, energy, agriculture, health and biodiversity. The summit will conclude on Wednesday after adopting an implementation plan on sustainable development and a political declaration. Enditem
