Vietnamese officials to stand trial for underworld gang crimes

Xinhuanet 2002-08-31 11:03:39

”””” HANOI, Aug. 31 (Xinhuanet) -- Seventeen police officers, prosecutors and journalists who are involved in the country's notorious underworld gang Nam Cam will be likely to stand for trial on charges of murder, gambling, bribery, and criminal protection.

””””According to local media Saturday, the Nam Cam case is a serious one involving about 150 people from various offices and agencies as well as different cities and provinces throughout Vietnam. The Nam Cam gang existed for many years (from 1994 to December 2001) and committed serious crimes.

””””The notorious gang was uncovered after kingpin Nam Cam was arrested on Dec. 16 last year during a large-scaled crack-down on organized crimes launched by national police in Ho Chi Minh City and other southern cities and provinces.

””””Presently, the first-phase investigation file on the case has been completed and will be sent to the Supreme People's Procuracy as early as next month in order to help bring him to trial in November as scheduled, investigators disclosed, saying that the trial may last about three months.

””””Police Major - Gen. Nguyen Viet Thanh told reporters that the Nam Cam case has been divided into two phases because the detention terms of some offenders are going to expire, while the police are continuing to investigate other persons involved.

””””In addition, public opinions in the country are awaiting an early trial of the Nam Cam case, said Thanh, chief of the case investigation team. Enditem
