International television broadcasters gather to plan 2004 Games coverage

Xinhuanet 2002-08-20 22:05:48

¡¡¡¡ATHENS, Aug. 20 (Xinhuanet) -- International television broadcasters gathered here on Tuesday to review preparations and fine tune coverage plans for the 2004 Olympics.

¡¡¡¡"This is a meeting that we traditionally hold with all the world broadcasters that cover the games," said Spaniard Manolo Romero, head of Athens Olympic Broadcasting.

¡¡¡¡Romero's company is the host broadcaster for the 2004 Games andplays a key role during the Olympics. It will produce and distribute the images from the Olympics to about 200 national broadcasters around the world, who pay for the rights to televise the games. NBC has already acquired 2004 rights for the United States.

¡¡¡¡Romero said the four-day meeting will cover "our plans about how we will cover the games from a television production point of view and from a technical standpoint."

¡¡¡¡The Spaniard has served as broadcast organization chief for three Summer Games - most recently in Sydney - and has been involved in the television broadcasting of seven Winter Games.

¡¡¡¡The meetings are being held in the seaside suburb of Kavouri near the Agios Kosmas sailing venue, which is now hosting the first test event of the 2004 Olympics.

¡¡¡¡Executives will be updated by Athens organizers on everything from taxes to troubling transport issues. Accommodation also remains an issue as there is a shortage of hotel rooms for the Olympic Family, which includes the broadcasters. Enditem
