¡¡¡¡YANGON, Aug. 9 (Xinhuanet) -- The Myanmar authorities Friday released 14 more
prisoners serving sentences for alleged breach oflaw, said a a government
statement.
¡¡¡¡The 14 prisoners, freed from various "correctional facilities,"include six
members of the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) and eight
individuals.
¡¡¡¡The statement said the government will continue to release moreindividuals
who are considered causing no harm to the country nor threaten the existing
peace, stability and unity of the nation.
¡¡¡¡The release has brought the total number of freed NLD members and its
activists to 303 since January 2001 including the 49 released after restriction
on Aung San Suu Kyi (ASSK), NLD generalsecretary, was lifted on May 6.
¡¡¡¡According to the official figures, there still remains 255 NLD members in
detention by the government including 17 parliament members elected in the 1990
general election.
¡¡¡¡After her release, Aung San Suu Kyi said her party will put itstop priority
to the bringing about of release of all political prisoners in the country.
¡¡¡¡The present release of detainees by the government also came three days
after the end of the latest visit to Myanmar of Razali Ismail, Special Envoy of
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Enditem
