Armed conflicts kill 12 in India-controlled Kashmir

ˇˇˇˇNEW DELHI, Aug. 1 (Xinhuanet) -- At least 12 people, including so-called militants and Indian soldiers, were killed in armed conflicts in India-controlled Kashmir, according to the Press Trust of India (PTI) Thursday.

ˇˇˇˇIndian security forces shot dead six militants in separate encounters in Udhampur and Doda districts of south Kashmir on Thursday, the agency quoted a defense spokesman as saying in Jammu,a major city in the Kashmir valley.

ˇˇˇˇAn Indian official claimed that a civilian was killed by militants in a village of Rajouri district on Wednesday.

ˇˇˇˇA captain of the Indian Army and four militants, allegedly fromPakistan, were killed Wednesday night in a fierce encounter at a high security residential complex housing senior civil and police officials in the border town of Rajouri, official sources said in the area.

ˇˇˇˇCaptain Rohit Reddy, who was leading one of the columns of troops against the militants, sustained serious injuries during the fighting and later succumbed to injuries, they said.

ˇˇˇˇThe militants, who had shifted from one house to another, resumed firing early on Thursday, forcing Indian troops to retaliate, killing four of them, they added.

ˇˇˇˇMeanwhile, five policemen were injured Thursday in a grenade explosion inside a police vehicle in Srinagar, capital of India-controlled Kashmir, the PTI said. Enditem
