Egyptian FM leaves for US on Mideast issue

””””CAIRO, July 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher left here on Sunday for the United States for talks on the volatile Mideast situation.

””””Speaking to reporters before his departure, Maher said US President George W. Bush might hold a meeting with foreign ministers of Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia after several rounds oftalks on the Mideast crisis by relevant parties.

””””The meetings aim to put an end to the deteriorating Mideast situation, prod Israel to withdraw its troops and help promote political actions to establish a Palestinian state, Maher said.

””””US Secretary of State Colin Powell, Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov, EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana and UN chief Kofi Annan are expected to gather in New York on July 16 to find a way out of the current Mideast crisis.

””””The quartet members will also meet Maher and Jordanian Foreign Minister Marwan Moasher at a dinner on the dame day.
