YOKOHAMA, Japan,
June 30 (Xinhuanet) -- Ronaldo struck twice in the second half to give Brazil a
2-0 win over Germany and their fifth World Cup title. After a goalless first half, the
Brazilians took a 1-0 lead at the 67th minute when German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn
was unable to hold onto a hard shot by Rivaldo just inside the penalty
area. Ronaldo ran in and pushed the rebound into the net.
Only twelve minutes later Ronaldo picked up a low cross from
Kleberson and fired past Kahn from near the edge of the area for his eighth goal
of the competition. The German team, the obvious underdogs in
the match, proved they were worthy opponents, especially in the first
half. They quite often caused turmoil in Brazilian defence with high balls
and long range shots. But the Brazilian team had the best
chances. Ronaldo missed two cleared chances in the first half while
Kleberson hit the crossbar with a fierce shot. Oliver Neuville
came closest for the Germans but his free kick at the 49th minute hit the post
after Brazilian goalkeeper Marcos managed to put a hand on it.
The win gave Brazilians their fifth World Cup title, after their wins in 1958,
1962, 1970 and 1994. Ronaldo, who scored eighth goals in this
tournament, totaled his World Cup goals to 12, level with legend Pele.
