Indonesian President Demands Maximum Punishment for Drug Criminals

Xinhuanet 2002-06-26 18:14:19

JAKARTA, June 26 (Xinhuanet) -- Indonesian President Megawati
Soekarnoputri called on law-enforcers to impose maximum punishment
for illegal drug dealers.
"I am happy to notice that law enforcement here is getting more
courageous. Indonesian judges now have courage to sentence illegal
drug dealers to death penalty," she said in a speech to
commemorate anti-drug day in Semarang, capital of Central Java
province on Wednesday.
She affirmed that although anti-drug campaign had been launched
for long, the problem was not automatically settled, so that the
authority should find an accurate solution to cut the linkage of
illegal drug activities.
"We must combat drug crimes from the mainstream. Should we
succeed in blocking the source of the crimes, illegal drug
circulation would logically stop", she was quoted by the Antara
News Agency as saying.
Anti-drug campaign should be launched nationwide to enable a
national movement in combating drug crimes.
"I demand that law enforcement not discriminate one against
another," the president stressed.
According to the data released by the Indonesian Anti-Drug
Agency, the Indonesian Police has identified 4,924 people
suspected as drug criminals and uncovered 3,617 cases of drug
crimes. The figure is almost doubled compared to that in 1999.
