ˇˇˇˇCAIRO, June 16 (Xinhuanet) -- The United States has extradited to Egypt a man
who was involved in the assassination of Egypt's late president Anwar el-Sadat,
a diplomat of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo said on Sunday.
ˇˇˇˇ"The defendant, named Nabil Sulaiman, was sentenced in absentia in the
case," the diplomat said, adding "he was handed over to the Egyptian authorities
on June 12 as part of the U.S.-Egyptian security cooperation."
ˇˇˇˇThe U.S. Embassy in Cairo issued a statement on Sunday, saying that "the
move came as a result of appropriate judicial procedures as Sulaiman had been
living illegally in the United States since 1992."
ˇˇˇˇThe statement quoted U.S. Ambassador in Cairo David Welch as saying that
"the extradition process was a result of successful bilateral talks that
demonstrate the close cooperation between the United States and Egypt in the war
against terrorism."
ˇˇˇˇ"The move also shows that the U.S. determination to work closelywith its
allies and friends to fight this epidemic," Welch added.
ˇˇˇˇMeanwhile, a senior security official said that "the accused is a member of
Al-Jihad organization and was sentenced in absentia forfive years in prison on
charge of the assassination of late president Sadat."
