Vietnam to Reduce Smoking Rate

Xinhuanet 2002-06-13 16:56:26

””””HANOI, June 13 (Xinhuanet) -- Vietnam aims to reduce the smoking rate among men to below 30 percent by 2005 and below 20 percent by2010 from the current level of 50 percent, according to a report of Vietnam News Agency on Thursday.

””””For women and adolescents, the country aims to reduce their smoking rates to below two percent and below seven percent respectively by 2010 from the current rate of 3.4 percent and 26 percent.

””””These targets are determined by a national program, which also aims to control all products made from tobacco so as to reduce diseases and deaths from smoking.

””””The program also ensures the right of non-smokers to live and work in a smoke-free environment.

””””Under a governmental document recently sent to the country's Anti-tobacco Committee, all ministries, governmental agencies and people's committees in cities and provinces nationwide are required to carry out the program through the 2002-2010 period. Enditem
