Philippine Official: No Deadline for Fighting Against Abu Sayyaf

Xinhuanet 2002-06-11 17:27:18

””””MANILA, June 11 (Xinhuanet) -- Philippine Presidential Adviser on National Security Roilo Golez said Tuesday that the government doesn't want to set a deadline for ultimately destroying the notorious Abu Sayyaf bandits.

””””Golez said that it would be hard to set up a schedule for this kind of engagement against the bandit group, the Philippine Star online news reported.

””””However, Golez reassured the public that the Arroyo government is doing everything it can to speedily destroy the group.

””””Golez also reiterated again that there are no U.S. troops present in the military's pursuit operations against the Abu Sayyaf.

””””Golez admitted the possibility of the U.S. troops staying longer but this depends on a new agreement, which needs further discussion.

””””Beginning at the end of January, the Philippine troops and U.S.soldiers hold joint exercises in the southern city of Zamboanga and Basilan province. Over 1,000 U.S. soldiers are training Philippine troops to fight against the Abu Sayyaf.

””””On last Friday, two of the three remaining hostages of Abu Sayyaf were killed during a crossfire between the government troops and the bandits in Zamboanga del Norte province near Zamboanga, the other one was wounded and rescued after more than one-year captivity.

””””Later on the day, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo vowed to eliminate the Abu Sayyaf members to the last one. Enditem
