ADDIS ABABA, June 6 (Xinhuanet) -- Ethiopia is currently ranked
the first among other African countries as a nation that loses
medical professionals and other intellectuals, the local media
reported Thursday.
Yohaness Kebede, public health specialist of the Ethiopian
Health Ministry was quoted as saying that out of 2,491 doctors
that the country educated during the past few years, more than 80
of them have already left the country seeking a better job in the
United States, South Africa and Canada as well as European
countries.
Ethiopia has currently only 45 dentists, 485 different
specialists, 33 sub-specialists serving a population of 60 million
in 110 hospitals throughout the country.
"Ethiopia's development will be blocked if the government give
special attention to the problem," said Yohaness.
He attributed the poor salary, political instability, lack of
better training as the main reason for the migration of the
doctors. Enditem
