Arab League Chief Accuses Israeli of Acting Beyond Law

Xinhuanet 2002-06-04 20:51:27

””””PARIS, June 4 (Xinhuanet) -- A senior official of the Cairo-based Arab League on Tuesday accused Israel of being a country that puts itself beyond international law, and reiterated that no international peace conference is possible unless Israel pulls back its troops.

””””"We are confronted with a fundamental dilemma as far as the peace chances between the Arab and Israelis are concerned," Secretary-General of the 22-member Arab League Amir Moussa told a press conference organized by the Chamber of Franco-Arab Trade.

””””Moussa said: "Israel has managed to create a new situation on the world stage by putting itself beyond all laws without feeling obliged to take consideration of the crimes that it has committed.

””””"The current Israeli government wants nothing but an appearanceof peace, which works for its occupation (of Palestinian territories), and a form of accord which omits all chances of solution leading to a real Palestinian State," he said.

””””"The situation is very grave...In this context, to hold an international conference will lead to undesirable results unless Israel retreats to the line of September 2000 and lifts its siege imposed on Palestinian camps."

””””Moussa reaffirmed that an international conference must have agreement on its principle and agenda before being launched, and all participants must accept the principle of land-for-peace.

””””Otherwise, the conference "would lead to an even more deteriorated situation with the return to violence that no one wishes," he said.

””””"There exists a real possibility of co-existence if those in power in Israel renounce its ephemeral policy and conceive a future of peace with its neighbors, in open borders and with wisdom," he said. Enditem
