Problem Along Thai-Myanmar Border to be Settled Soon: Thai PM

Xinhuanet 2002-05-23 23:00:55

””””BANGKOK, May 23 (Xinhuanet) -- The closure of checkpoints along the Thai-Myanmar border by Myanmar Authorities stemmed from misunderstanding between the two countries, and the problem would be settled soon, Thai Prime Minister said Thursday.

””””The premier told Channel 11 that as neighboring countries, Thailand and Myanmar sometimes might face misunderstandings, but those problems could be settled easily by explanation and sound understanding at the government level.

””””He said he believed Myanmar authorities would reopen the checkpoints over the next couple of days.

””””On Wednesday, Myanmar decided to close some major border checkpoints along Thai-Myanmar border, accusing Thailand of providing supports to the anti-government Shan rebels who attackedfour military positions held by Myanmar and allied ethnic Wa forces on Monday.

””””A recent training by Thai troops along the border seemed to addup to the misunderstanding, the report said.

””””Deputy Defense Minister Yuthasak Sasiprapha also affirmed that Thailand had never supported any minority group.

””””The misunderstanding point was believed to be settled at the next meeting of the joint border commission, he added. Enditem
