”””” KAMPALA, May 20 (Xinhuanet) -- Crocodiles have already eaten over a dozen
people since January this year along the shores of Lake Victoria in the eastern
Mayuge district of Uganda, local media reported on Monday.
””””Namugongo resident council chairman Joseph Waiwsa was quoted bythe New
Vision as saying that the crocodiles had attacked many children from going down
the lake to collect water.
””””"We are living in fear of the carnivorous crocodiles that have already
eaten over a dozen people this year and over 30 people in the last two years,"
Waiwsa added.
””””The crocodiles had increased in the recent months since the heavy rains started,
local people said, adding that the crocodiles had eaten over eight
people from Namugongo landing site and neighboring areas.
””””It was recalled that in Mayuge's neighboring district, Bugiri, the Uganda
Wildlife Authority sent a four-man patrol armed with semi-automatic rifles to
hunt down crocodiles in March this year after the man-eaters killing over 40
people in the district in past six months.
””””Both Bugiri and Mayuge districts are located in east part of Uganda. There
are about 100 crocodiles on Uganda's portion of lakeVictoria, African's biggest
fresh water lake, which Kenya and Tanzania also share. Enditem
