Vietnam Discovers Four Endangered Bird Species

Xinhuanet 2002-05-20 16:38:08

”””” HANOI, May 20 (Xinhuanet) -- Vietnam has found four bird species which are listed as endangered in Asia in the country's northern coastal province of Quang Ninh during a survey co-sponsored by Birdlife International, Vietnam News Agency reported on Monday.

””””The survey showed that the provincial coastline is home to 83 bird species belonging to 29 families, including Blackfaced Spoonbill, Great Spotted Eagle, Saunders' Gull, and the Chinese Egret, all on the Asian "redlist." Especially the Black faced Spoonbill, a species typical to Southeast Asia, is threatened and on the brink of extinction.

””””The survey found the coastline of Quang Ninh province, which shares common border with China's Guangxi province, is also home to two rare bird species in Vietnam, namely the Great Cormorant and Collared Crow.

””””On the province's Ha Nam island, which was recognized as the country's Important Bird Area (IBA) in December 2001, local scientists have found 150 Great Cormorants in aquaculture ponds, the largest number seen during the past 15 years. Enditem
