WASHINGTON,
May 19 (Xinhua) -- Arie Luyendyk, 49, became the oldest driver to qualify
for Indy 500 after the rain shortened qualifying session at the Indianapolis
Motor Speedway on Sunday. Dutch-born Luyendyk, who has won the
Indy 500 twice, led the list of drivers who filled out the fastest field in
history for next Sunday's race. He averaged 228.848mph
(386.216kph) in the last of three qualifying sessions in a G Force Chevrolet
in his four-lap, ten mile (16 kilometre) run after having tire sensor
problems last weekend. The 33-car field averaged
228.648mph (367.895 kph) eclipsing the 227.807mph (366.541kph) record set in
1996. "Obviously, the conditions were perfect today. It's nice
to know that when it counts, I get really calm about things," Luyendyk
said. Enditem |
