Taiwan Not Protectorate of Any Foreign Country: FM Spokesman

Xinhuanet 2002-05-09 20:38:33
BEIJING, May 9 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman
Kong Quan reiterated on Thursday at a regular press conference
that Taiwan is an integral part of China, and not the protectorate
of any foreign country.
In response to recent remarks of a high-ranking U.S. official
that the U.S. will firmly observe the commitment of protecting
Taiwan, Kong said that the Taiwan issue is China's internal affair,
and no foreign country has the right to interfere in it.
Kong said U.S. leaders have reiterated time and again that the
United States adheres to the One-China policy and abides by the
three U.S.-China joint communiques, and that it neither supports "
Taiwan independence" nor encourages the splitist activities of the
"Taiwan independence" forces.
Kong noted that the U.S. should strictly abide by its
commitments, and play a constructive role in China's peaceful
reunification process.   Enditem
